Arboricultural Care Training

This five-day course will cover the primary topics of tree care and management that arborists, consulting arborists and municipal foresters regularly apply in their day to day practice.

Day 1   Pruning
The first session in the series will be on pruning.  Five topic areas will be covered in this day-long session.  The opening topic will provide a framework for the day by introducing participants to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A300 Pruning Standards.  The remaining topics will include a review of equipment, large tree pruning, structural pruning of small trees, pruning for fruit production.  The trees biological response to pruning will be discussed within each topic area.

Day 2   Tree Planting and Tree Preservation
The simple act of planting a tree is not so simple.  The benefits that we derive from trees over their life are maximized when the tree is healthy and expanding crown.  Selecting healthy tree stock, siting the tree in an appropriate location and installing the tree correctly guarantee a tree that will be contributing for generations to come.  Incorrectly done shortens the life of the tree and increases the cost of maintenance.  The session will cover all three topics in detail in classroom and outdoors discussions.

Once established, a planted tree experiences significant impacts from both humans and the built environment.  This session will discuss how factors such as soil compaction and construction activities negatively affect tree health.  The final topic covered will outline the steps required to implement an effective tree preservation plan.

Day 3   Support Systems and Tree Appraisals

While pruning and removal of trees are common forms of arboriculture.  Other methods, such as support systems are available to prolong a tree’s presence and reduce stresses on the tree.  Cabling and a range of support systems will be discussed.

Important for damage and insurance claims, the second part of the session will outline the process for determining the value of a tree.  The foundation of the talk will be the recently released 10th Edition of the Plant Appraisal Guide.

Day 4  Tree Risk Assessments
Using the ISA’s tree risk assessment methodology, this day long course will introduce participants to the process for assessing trees for risk.  Discussions will focus on: determining the likelihood of tree part failure, time frame, the likelihood of striking a target, and consequences.  The session will be separated into classroom discussion and outdoor assessment exercises.

Day 5   Tree Inventories
When managing and maintaining a group of trees, information on those trees help in making individual and system level decisions.  This session will discuss the elements of a tree inventory and the range of uses of the collected data.  An inventory of a local site will take place and an exercise calculating the environmental benefits of the inventoried site will occur.
