Succession Planning Workshop for Foresters

Succession planning is critical to the future integrity of our forests. It’s also a daunting task for landowners and many have not taken the first step or even thought about the first step. As a forester, you can make a difference. You are often the first person or the most consistent person who interacts with landowners about their woods. This is a unique opportunity for you to begin talking to landowners about the planning process and its importance for future generations.

We’d like to arm you with enough information to get landowners excited about their land legacy and thinking about the steps they may need to take to ensure that their legacy lives on.

This workshop is a mix of presentation and practical exercises that will give you the knowledge and tools to start a conversation with landowners. We will take you through the materials used for landowner trainings to familiarize you with these and other resources. We’ll engage you in activities.

You’ll experience the succession planning workshop much like a landowner would to understand the tasks, obstacles, challenges, and opportunities. You can wear the landowner shoes (or your own) as we:

  • Clarify values and goals
  • Learn the steps to successful planning
  • Access tools to support planning
  • Network with your peers
  • Learn about legal options that can support a plan
  • Learn about the professional resources available to landowners
