Forest Soils Course--SAF and ANR Accredited

Location: Bristol, Vermont. Indoor course components take place at the Vermont Family Forests office (14 School St. Bristol, VT). Field studies take place at The Waterworks property (4783 Plank Rd. Bristol, VT).

This 16-hour accredited course introduces the science and ecology of forest soil. Through classroom lectures (4 hours) and outdoor investigations (12 hours), participants learn about soil properties and learn basic field soil examination techniques while studying several different soil types (including glacial outwash deposits, clayplain soils, soils formed in acid or neutral tills, and wetlands and streambank soils). Taught by soil scientist Dr. Wendy Sue Harper, this course is appropriate for anyone interested in improving their understanding of soils and how they influence our landscape, including landowners, natural resource professionals, and educators. Participants can receive continuing education credits from the Society of American Foresters or the State of Vermont ANR/DEC.
