Exploring Silvicultural Strategies in Northern New England: Eastern Hemlock and Northern White-Cedar

Resource Type

Building on earlier presentations about northern hardwood and conifer forests, this webinar will focus on eastern hemlock and northern white-cedar in northern New England. Ecology and management of hemlock and white-cedar will be reviewed, including natural history, cultural values, status of the resource, potential climate change impacts, and silvicultural outcomes. Hemlock and white-cedar in mixedwood (softwood – hardwood) stands will be highlighted. The presentation will include the latest research and recommendations for managing these systems based on 60 years of research by the U.S. Forest Service at the Penobscot Experimental Forest in Maine and elsewhere.

Presenter: Dr. Laura S. Kenefic, Research Forester and Team Leader, U.S. Forest Service, Northern Research Station
